FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
-
I've never made jewellery before. Is that ok?Of course! Most of our attendees have had zero experience but every single person has gone home with a beautiful and unique creation. Everyone is welcome!
-
Is there a minimum age for the workshops? We encourage younger people to come and learn silversmithing. However, anyone under the age of 16 will need to be accompanied by a booked adult and be under their supervision throughout the class. We have had young people as young as 13 participate in the ring making workshop, including the sawing and soldering.
-
Can I incorporate a stone into my design? This is definitely a possibility for the Wax Carving Workshops. However, please get in touch with a photo and rough design ideas to ensure you will be able to achieve your design during the workshop. Send us an email at info@osakanajewellery.com.
-
Can I make jewellery in gold?Yes you can for the Wax Carving Workshop! You can have your wax design cast in 9K, 14K, or 18K yellow or rose gold. You'll be provided with a quote and asked to pay a deposit before your design is cast.
-
Do you do private workshops?Yes absolutely! Most of our private workshops have a minimum of 3 people. If you have a large group, we recommend the wax workshops. We can even come to you! Check out our Mobile Jewellery Workshop.

Do you do mobile workshops?Yes! Our wax pendant workshops using soft wax can go mobile! So if you're based in Auckland and want us to come to you, check out our Mobile Jewellery Workshop.
-
What's the difference between the silversmithing and wax workshops? In the silversmithing workshop, you'll be working directly with silver and learning all the basics of silversmithing (e.g., sawing, forming, texturing, soldering, and finishing). In the wax workshops, you'll be sculpting/carving your design out of wax, which will then be cast in silver/gold after the class.
-
Can I come alone or do I need to book as a group? You can definitely come alone to our scheduled workshops. In fact, most people who come to the scheduled workshops do, but they leave having made friends with like-minded makers! Of course, you are more than welcome to book as a group to the scheduled workshops too!
-
Can I make something other than a fingerprint?Absolutely! You can mold the wax into any shape you like. The casting will be an exact replica of your model (even the smallest of details!), so feel free to get creative!
-
Can I have my impression cast in gold?No problem! You can upgrade to 9K yellow or rose gold when you complete the return form. Check your inbox after you submit the form and you'll be sent a link to upgrade your pendant.
-
Is it safe for babies/children/animals?Yes, the wax is safe for our young ones and pets. However, please ensure that they are fully supervised while making your impression as the wax balls can be a choking hazard.
-
Will I get a good impression from my newborn? Most babies will not develop proper fingerprints until around 12-18 months. However, we think that the tiny imprint of a newborn finger is just as special as a fingerprint!
-
Can I have an initial placed onto the pendant?Of course! We can stamp an initial on the back of the pendant for free. Let us know what you would like when you place your order.

How do I look after my silver jewellery?Sterling silver does tarnish (just from the air and any moisture), so it's best to take off your jewellery before you shower or do the washing up, and keep it away from creams and perfumes. When you're not wearing it, best to keep it in a (preferably airtight) box and give it a polish with a polishing cloth at the first signs of tarnish. Storing with a silica sachet (like the ones you often get in food packets) helps to slow the process too.
